Here’s to our meter readers who brave the elements to keep us comfortable
One of the many life lessons that COVID has taught us is to be thankful to our essential workers who go the extra mile – in sometimes uncomfortable and dangerous situations – all for our benefit.
Take meter readers, for example, who are in the field on a daily basis. Their role is an important one. They tell energy suppliers how much water we’re actually consuming. Without accurate reading, we usually end up paying too much on estimated usage. That’s one frustration none of us needs right now.
For municipalities, meter reading of water, electricity and gas consumption is vital because it contributes to revenue generation. It ensures accurate billing and eliminates the over and underestimation of accounts.
And so our meter readers visit each stand of a municipality checking to see that everything is working as it should. They sometimes have to contend with dangers such as being chased by a dog, being mugged, run over by a vehicle, or staring down dangerous wildlife like spiders, scorpions and snakes, not to mention the occasional unruly householder. Yet, they press on.
Inzalo UMS currently has over sixty meter readers at various municipalities across South Africa, who also make use of their meter reading software.
So, during this cold spell, let us spare a thought to these enthusiastic men and women who help to keep our taps running and our hearts overflowing with gratitude.
To them, we say thank you.
